![]() To configure a controller, go to Options -> Configure Controller Settings. If the game has a patch, open the Patcher and use Super Mario 64 as a ROM and Super Mario 64 Land as a patch. If the game is its own separate ROM, simply open the ROM hack in the emulator. From the games mentioned, Star Road and Last Impact have their own separate ROM, while Cursed Castles and Land have a patch - can't remember what Sapphire uses. ![]() The newer ones are the ones that generally use the ROM patch. Some of these games require a separate ROM itself, others the ROM patch. Download either the ROM or the ROM patch. ![]() Test to see if you can get the standard Super Mario 64 working as a starter. System -> Soft Reset after following step 4. So refer to this step after getting the ROM hack going. You may have to make the 4MB -> 8MB switch in the actual ROM hacks themselves as well. Click Options -> Settings -> Config Super Mario 64 -> Switch -> Change the Memory Size from 4MB to 8MB. In Project 64, click File -> Open ROM -> Choose Super Mario 64. Place that ROM in a folder or on your desktop, or wherever. You have to double click the books icon to get to the actual ROM. The file itself won't be the stack of books FYI. Extract the ROM using WinRAR or 7Zip (just open one of the two and click Extract (To) on the Super Mario 64 ROM. Download Project 64 or Mupen 64 (I use Project 64, and all subsequent steps will be for Project 64). You need four things: (1.) Project 64 or Mupen 64, (2.) a ROM of Super Mario 64, (3.) the Super Mario 64 Land patch, and (4.) WinRAR or 7Zip. Other popular Super Mario 64 ROM Hacks: Super Mario 74, Super Mario 64: The Green Stars, Super Mario and the Marvel Adventure, Super Slide 64, Peach's Christmas Invitation, Super Mario x Ocarina of Time, Super Donkey Kong 64, and Super Mario Maker 64. The design stays closer to Super Mario 64 than the other games, but it still has many of its own ideas. Super Mario Sapphire: A fun game to run through if you're looking for something quick. Super Mario and the Cursed Castles: Very cool overworld theming and interesting, one-of-a-kind levels. Not as many new assets as the two aforementioned games, but the design is top notch. Super Mario: Star Road: This ROM hack was one of the earliest to be a full game while having an all around great level of quality. Mario's move-set has also expanded to include an aerial dive, butt bounce, and mid-air hover. Each level has its own theme that incorporates the world theme. Each of the 33 levels and 8 bosses are totally unique. Super Mario 64 Land: Also by Kaze Emanuar, this ROM hack plays more like Super Mario 3D Land/World in its design in that the levels are linear, but there are stars along the way. There are 12 new power-ups, a ton of custom assets, and many newly designed bosses. It is what I would consider the single most technically impressive Super Mario 64 ROM hacks and one of the best designed as well. Super Mario: Last Impact: This ROM hack took the creator Kaze Emanuar 4000 hours to complete. I'm going to talk about what I would consider my 5 favorites, but note that there's many more. Super Mario 64 ROM Hacking is nothing new, but in recent years the quality, length, and uniqueness of the hacks have increased tenfold. Here's an album that showcases an impressive level from each game I'm going to talk about.
